  • 1 갑오년 정월에 고부 군수 조병갑(趙秉甲)의 악정과 토색질에 분개한 농민들이 전명숙을 두령으로 하여 배들평의 말목장터에서 봉기하니
  • 2 고부 관아를 점령한 농민군은 억울하게 옥에 갇힌 사람들을 모두 풀어 주고 원성의 근원인 만석보(萬石洑)를 헐어 버리니라.
  • 3 이에 조정에서는 쫓겨난 조병갑의 후임으로 박원명(朴源明)을 새로이 고부 군수로 임명하거늘
  • 4 박원명이 진심으로 선치(善治)를 베푸니 어느 정도 원성이 누그러진 백산(白山)의 농민군이 모두 해산하니라.

  • 5 한편 이른바 ‘고부민란’의 진상을 밝히고 민심을 수습하기 위해 안핵사(按{使)로 파견된 이용태(李容泰)는 동학 교도를 민란의 주모자로 몰아 동학 교도 대검거령을 내리니
  • 6 고부 전역에서 군졸들이 죄없는 농민들을 구타하고 부녀자를 강음(强淫)하며 재산을 강탈하고 가옥을 불지르며
  • 7 또 동학 교도를 조기 꿰미 엮듯 포승줄로 묶어 닥치는 대로 잡아들이고 그 처자들까지 살상하니라.
  • 8 이에 전 군민의 통분이 뼈에 사무쳐 민심은 순식간에 다시 험악해지고 장차 큰 난리가 터질 것이라는 불안감이 고부 전역을 휩쓸더라.
  • The Start of the Eastern Learning Revolution

    1In January 1894, farmers enraged by the tyrannical rule and extortions of the governor of Gobu County, Jo Byeong-gap, made Jeon Myeong-suk their leader and staged an uprising in Malmok marketplace in Baedeulpyeong Township. 2After seizing control of government buildings in Gobu County, the peasant army released everyone who was unjustly imprisoned and tore down Manseokbo Reservoir, which was a source of peasant outrage.

    3Soon afterward, the royal court appointed Bak Won-myeong as the new governor of Gobu County, replacing the ousted Jo Byeong-gap. 4When Bak Won-myeong demonstrated sincerity in carrying out just rule, the peasant army’s outrage eased and the army based on Baeksan Mountain soon completely disbanded.

    Mass Arrest Order of Eastern Learning Followers

    5Meanwhile, Yi Yong-tae was appointed Revolt Investigator and dispatched to the county to uncover the truth about the Gobu Peasant Revolt and restore public trust, and he accused the followers of Eastern Learning of being the instigators of the peasant revolt and issued a blanket order to arrest Eastern Learning followers. 6As a result, throughout Gobu County, soldiers attacked innocent farmers, raped women, stole personal property, and burned homes. 7Moreover, the soldiers indiscriminately arrested Eastern Learning followers, binding them together in trains with rope, and even killed the wives and children of those arrested. 8The resulting fury of the county’s populace was so intense, the public mood suddenly turning volatile, that the entire county was seized with the fear that a massive disaster would soon erupt.
