¹Taemonim owned five pieces of silk, each five feet in length and each of a different color: green, red, yellow, white, and black. The disciples called them “guest cloths.” ²She wore the white silk most often, as a scarf, and when She touched the sick with a sweeping motion of this cloth, they were healed. If the poor were touched by the cloth, they became prosperous. Everyone wished for Taemonim to grant them its touch.

³Occasionally, Taemonim would hang the white cloth on a bamboo pole like a banner and conduct a work of renewal.⁴If She made the cloth flutter by shaking the bamboo pole, a strong wind would suddenly arise and envelop the disciples, and they would grow solemn before the majesty and creation-transformation of the way of the spirits.

⁵Whenever Taemonim left the dojang, She always took Her tobacco pipe. If a disciple, new to serving Taemonim and thus unaware of Her habits, attempted to carry it for Her, She would strike the person with the pipe as a warning.

⁶Engraved on the tobacco pipe, which was four feet in length, were a crane and a pine tree. No matter how massive and strong a man, he would be dragged along if he was caught and pulled by the pipe.⁷If a follower spoke of pain, Taemonim would place the bowl of the pipe on the affected area and chant a mantra, and the pain would instantly vanish without a trace.⁸Moreover, if the sky was heavily overcast during a work of renewal, the clouds would disappear when Taemonim swung Her tobacco pipe.⁹If She waved Her pipe in a circle on the last night of the month, a round moon appeared. If She waved Her pipe in a circle again, the moon disappeared; and if She waved the pipe in a circle yet again, the moon soon reappeared.

¹⁰Taemonim’s tobacco drawer was crafted of stone. Initially, the disciples had a brass ashtray as large as a washbasin made for Taemonim. When She tapped this ashtray with the bowl of Her pipe to discard ash from it, the ashtray rung like a bell; ¹¹and when She struck the ashtray with the pipe during works of renewal, pieces of brass would invariably break off. ¹²Consequently, the disciples had a new brass ashtray made for Taemonim on two successive occasions, but this proved to be futile. In the end, the disciples had a wooden one made for Her.

¹³Later, Gahng Hwi-man kept Taemonim’s wooden ashtray, which was so large that he stored old texts and his book of family lineage within it.
