절대 신성神性의 세 가지 주요 기능인 창조, 유지, 파괴는 세 가지 신의 모습으로 구현된다—우주의 창조를 맡을 때는 위대한 신인 브라흐마로, 유지자의 역할을 할 때는 비슈누로, 파괴자일 때는 시바로 나타난다. 일반 대중에게 신성의 속성과 성질들을 설명하기 위해서 고도의 상징주의 체계가 발전하였다. 신神의 수행하는 역할에 따라 서로 다른 도상학적인 특징들을 그려냄으로써 서로 다른 시기의 상이한 신들을 표현하였다. 예를 들어, 창조신 브라흐마는 모든 우주를 창조했다는 점을 상징하기 위해 모든 방향으로 향한 네 머리를 가진 모습으로 묘사된다. 창조와 유지가 밀접하게 연관됨을 표현하기 위해 브라흐마는 유지의 신 비슈누의 배꼽으로부터 출현한다. 비슈누는 우유의 바다에 거주하는 많은 머리가 달린 뱀 아난타 위에 누워 있는 모습으로 그려진다. 아난타는 우주 에너지를 의미하고, 바다는 아난다 즉 절대 존재 브라흐만의 끝없는 지복과 은혜를 상징한다. 비슈누는 무한을 상징하는 푸른 빛을 띠고 있는데 이는 그가 푸른 하늘처럼 한계가 없음을 의미한다. 우주의 파괴자 시바는 종종 춤의 왕 나타라자로 그려지는데, 여기서 춤은 우주 에너지를 의미한다. 그는 인간의 에고를 의미하는 악마 아파스마라 푸루샤를 밟고 춤을 추고 있다. 오직 인간은 자신의 에고를 부수고서야 신성을 성취할 수 있다. 그의 네 번째 손은 아바야 무드라를 취하고 있는데 이는 “두려워 말라, 내가 그것을 파괴하여 그대를 지킬 것이다.”라는 의미이다. 그의 뒤편의 불의 고리는 창조와 유지와 파괴의 도를 통한 우주의 끝없는 순환 운동과 연속성을 나타낸다.

The three main functions of God-head, Creation, Preservation and Destruction, are further simplified by the One Great God, Ishwara, being called Brahma, when he takes over the creation of the universe; Vishnu, whacen he assumes the role of the Preserver; and Siva, when he is the Destroyer.

A high degree of symbolism has been evolved to explain the attributes and qualities of God-head to the masses. Different iconographical features are depicted for the different deities at different times, depending on the roles they perform.

Brahma, the creator, for example is depicted with four heads facing all directions symbolizing that he has created the entire universe. To emphasize the closeness of creation and preservation, Brahma is shown emerging from the navel of Vishnu, the Preserver.

Vishnu is represented as lying on the many-headed Cobra, Ananta, in the ocean of milk. Ananta denotes cosmic energy and the ocean symbolizes Ananda or the endless bliss and grace of the Brahman. Vishnu is given the colour blue to symbolize infinity, as he is limitless as the blue sky.
