Yi Sang-ho’s Wife Drives Away Jeon Dae-yun 1In Yonghwa-dong Village, Jeon Dae-yun was the only one to attend on Taemonim. At the time, Taemonim was fifty-three years of age and Jeon Dae-yun was seventy-two. 2After she began serving Taemonim, Dae-yun received the inspiration of spirits, endowing her with the extraordinary abilities to not only conduct healings but also foresee the future.3Taemonim allowed no one but Dae-yun to serve Her meals, empty the chamber pot, and perform all other such chores.4Yet, whenever Taemonim dealt with Dae-yun, She spoke harshly to her, “What a wretch! Such a wretch!” Even if Dae-yun was without any particular fault, Taemonim nonetheless harshly castigated her, which left onlookers feeling disconcerted.5Even so, Dae-yun was not at all discontent but remained steadfast and served Taemonim with complete sincerity, awakenedness, and faithfulness. 6One day, Sang-ho’s wife sent word through a messenger to Dae-yun’s eldest son, Gim Su-eung, in Taein County, urging him to take his mother home.7But Su-eung was fully acquainted with Taemonim’s realm of spiritual authority and hence believed that there must be a deep purpose in Taemonim’s conduct, so he did not bring his mother home.8Sang-ho’s wife next sent word to Dae-yun’s grandson, Jun-ik, “If your grandmother stays here, her situation will remain appalling, so take her home.” 9Knowing of this, Taemonim summoned Sang-ho’s wife and severely rebuked her. Misfortune Befalls Dae-yun After She Returns Home 10Before long, Jun-ik came to Yonghwa-dong Village to take Dae-yun home, and on that day, just as before, Taemonim said, “What a wretch! Such a wretch!” to Dae-yun, which spurred Jun-ik to resentment and to forcibly taking his grandmother home with him. 11Not long after Dae-yun returned to Taein County, her younger son, Gim Su-nam, died. The following year, Dae-yun ailed for a long spell and then passed away. Several years later, her husband, Gim Du-ok, and her eldest son, Su-eung, also died one after the other, devastating their household. 12In short, Taemonim had treated Dae-yun harshly to release her from the karma of sins in order to extend her life. 13But Sang-ho’s wife, possessing not an inkling of Taemonim’s profound motives, brought about an irreversible end. 14In the years that followed, Sang-ho’s wife repeatedly expressed her regret, saying, “Not understanding the realm of a divine being, I severed a sacred bond between the Venerable Lady and Dae-yun, and this led to a sin.”
