¹One day, the disciples gathered at the dojang for a chiseong. Delighted to see one another, they greeted each other and then sat in a circle chatting about the current times and the state of affairs.²Taemonim chastised them for this. “You rogues! You are not chanting the mantras, and you are talking that nonsense again!”³She then struck each of them, both young and old, on their heads with Her tobacco pipe.⁴Being struck by Her pipe caused a blinding agony as painful as being struck by lightning.

⁵Yet, no matter how hard Taemonim hit the disciples, they were never injured; instead their senses were jolted awake, leaving them feeling refreshed.⁶Taemonim did this to infuse them with spiritual energy, but the disciples grew so fearful of being struck that they sought to avoid Taemonim’s presence.

⁷Taemonim frequently struck the disciples on their foreheads with Her tobacco pipe in this manner, warning, “Cease all idle talk and meditate.”

⁸One day, the disciples had been chanting mantras for a time when Taemonim entered, and the disciples chanted all the more loudly, sweating profusely, fearful of Her pipe.⁹Taemonim drew near the disciples and thundered a rebuke, “You rogues! What good is it if you do not reform your minds, but instead open your mouths and croak like frogs?” She then struck their heads with Her pipe. The disciples did not know what to do.

¹⁰She would often admonish the disciples, “Though you are dressed in white, you are dark on the inside. People like you are all thieves.”

¹¹Taemonim rebuked and punished the disciples because She was troubled by their improper mindset and motivation for their practice; and She wished that they would define their sense of purpose and dedicate themselves to their practice upon contemplating how the Later Heaven’s Paradise of Immortality would arrive.

¹²Taemonim one day declared, “You! Old donkeys and stale dao seekers are of no worth.”
