¹On March 3, 1921 (DG 51), Jo Cheol-je became so obsessed with a rumor—‘if one practices meditation in the presence of Sangjenim’s holy remains, they will reap powerful qi and thus attain enlightenment and the number of their followers will vastly increase’—²that he sent eight trusted male subordinates to Sangjenim’s grave on Jangtaennal Hillock in Guritgol Village to dig up the holy remains under the cover of night.

³Meanwhile, Hyeong-ryeol was in Seoul, and his wife, Ho-yeon, was resting in the outer room of their house in Guritgol Village after having given birth to a daughter three days earlier.⁴In the still of the night, a sudden downpour fell, and a bolt of lightning shot into the room and coiled around her body.

⁵Startled awake, Ho-yeon sat up and gathered her wits. Sangjenim’s Holy Spirit roared at her in a thunderous voice, “Why are you doing nothing while My remains are being stolen!”

⁶She opened the door and called out to Hyeong-ryeol’s eldest son, Chan-mun. “A sword of fire entered my room—please go quickly to the Teacher’s grave and find out what is wrong.”

⁷Chan-mun rushed to Jangtaennal Hillock and found that the grave had just been excavated. He also noticed the distant torchlight of the grave robbers in flight, but felt that it was futile to chase after them and instead returned to the house.

⁸During this time, Sangjenim’s Holy Spirit had also thundered at Hyeong-ryeol, who was in Seoul, “How can you all sleep when My remains are being disturbed?”

⁹Hyeong-ryeol immediately left Seoul with Gim Deok-chan and several others and arrived at his house at daybreak the next day.¹⁰As Hyeong-ryeol passed through the gate, he asked in a frantic voice, “Did something occur last night?”

¹¹Ho-yeon described to Hyeong-ryeol the events of the night before, and so Hyeong-ryeol hurried to the grave site, but discovered only an empty hole. He declared, “This must be Jo Cheol-je’s doing.”
