¹Gyeong-seok had the three porters bear out the medicine cabinet, the chest, the pestle and mortar, the herb cutter, the clothes rod, the writings on the walls, a picture frame, all other implements, and even the dust swept from the floor.²Finally, the wallpaper was removed, bringing to fulfillment Sangjenim’s pronouncement, “The day to remove the wallpaper of the medicine room must soon arrive.”

³Gyeong-seok presented Hyeong-ryeol with twenty won, saying, “Please use this meager sum of money to buy medicine for your ailing daughter.”

⁴After bidding farewell, Gyeong-seok and the three porters set out into the wind and rain, and when they reached the Gate of Memorial at the entrance of the village, the rainstorm and thunder ceased and the sound of mournful wailing rose from Hyeong-ryeol’s house.

⁵A moment later, a messenger came from the house bearing news of the death of Lady Gim.⁶The death of Lady Gim was the fulfillment of Sangjenim’s pronouncement to Hyeong-ryeol, “The medicine cabinet is a chest for a peaceful burial.”⁷Gyeong-seok then realized that his inadvertent writing of the character deceased mother (妣) instead of the character empress (妃) the day before Sangjenim’s ascension was Sangjenim’s foreshadowing of Lady Gim’s fate.

⁸Gyeong-seok arrived in Wonpyeong Village, bringing the medicine cabinet. Taemonim asked, “Did you hear anything while you were bringing the medicine cabinet?”

⁹“Indeed, I heard wailing,” Gyeong-seok answered, and he spoke of the death of Lady Gim.

¹⁰“How tragic,” lamented Taemonim, and She gave Gyeong-seok a generous sum of money. “Take this money to her family to help with the funeral cost.”
