¹One night shortly after nine o’clock, six or seven disciples were sitting with Taemonim,²when Gahng Eung-chil commented, “The sun rises every day, but the moon shines brightly only near the fifteenth night of the month. At the month’s end and beginning, we often feel stifled.”

³Taemonim revealed, “This is so because, in the Early Heaven, yin and yang and the dosu of heaven and earth are unbalanced.⁴In the Later Heaven, the sun shall shine every day, and the moon shall shine every night—there shall be no skewed yin and skewed yang.⁵I could make the moon appear this very instant, but I will not do so, because it is not yet the right time.”

⁶However, one disciple pleaded, “It would be wonderful to behold the moon at this time.”

⁷Taemonim eventually relented, “I should not, but since you desire it so much, I will give you a glimpse of the moon.”⁸She then ordered the disciples to stand outside in the yard and commanded, “Recite the name ‘Moonlight Shines Everywhere Bodhisattva’ in your heart and gaze into the eastern sky.”

⁹They all did so and beheld, over a mountain in the east, the rising of a brilliant moon like a large wheel.

¹⁰“Have you seen enough?” Taemonim asked.

“Indeed, we have,” the disciples answered.

“You are quite talented,” Taemonim remarked. ¹¹“I have provisionally exercised the dao mastery of the ways of Immortalism. In the Later Heaven, when the sun sets, the moon will rise; when the moon sets, the sun will rise.” Immediately after She spoke these words, darkness descended all around them once again.

¹²Taemonim one day proclaimed, “In the Early Heaven, yin and yang have been unbalanced, spawning a history of bitterness and grief. I shall usher in the Later Heaven to bring forth a new heaven and earth.” She also declared:

천문음양정사 혼백동서남북 천지조화정치
Ruling in accordance with the principle of the stars in heaven and with yin and yang.
The east, west, south, and north are the heavenly soul and the earthly soul.
Governing by heaven and earth’s creation-transformation.
