  • 개벽이란 이렇게 쉬운 것이라
    1절을사년 7월에 상제님께서 원일과 두어 성도를 데리고 변산 개암사(開巖寺)에 가시어 원일에게 쇠머리 한 개와 술 한 병을 준비하라고 명하신 뒤
    2절청수 한 그릇을 방 한편에 놓으시고 쇠머리를 삶아 청수 앞에 진설하신 뒤에 그 앞에 원일을 꿇어앉히시고 양황 세 개비를 청수에 넣으시니 갑자기 비바람이 크게 일어나니라.
    3절상제님께서 원일에게 이르시기를 “이제 청수 한 동이에 양황 한 갑을 넣으면 천지가 물바다가 될지라.
    4절개벽이란 이렇게 쉬운 것이니 그리 알지어다. 만일 이것을 때에 이르기 전에 쓰면 재앙만 끼칠 뿐이니라.” 하시고
    5절손가락으로 물을 찍어 부안 석교(石橋)를 향해 뿌리시니 갑자기 그 쪽으로 구름이 모여들어 큰비가 쏟아지는데 개암사 부근은 청명하더라.
    후천개벽의 상생 정신을 깨 주심
    6절상제님께서 원일에게 명하시어 “속히 집에 갔다 오라.” 하시거늘 원일이 명을 받고 집에 가 보니 아우의 집이 방금 내린 비에 무너져서 그 권속이 원일의 집에 모여 있는지라
    7절원일이 슬픔을 이기지 못하여 곧 돌아와 그대로 아뢰니 상제님께서 말씀하시기를
    8절“개벽이란 이렇게 쉬운 것이라. 천하를 물로 덮어 모든 것을 멸망케 하고 우리만 살아 있으면 무슨 복이 되리오.” 하시고
    9절또 말씀하시기를 “대저 제생의세(濟生醫世)는 성인의 도(道)요, 재민혁세(災民革世)는 웅패(雄覇)의 술(術)이라.
    10절이제 천하가 웅패에게 괴롭힘을 당한 지 오랜지라 내가 상생(相生)의 도로써 만민을 교화하여 세상을 평안케 하려 하나니
    11절새 세상을 보기가 어려운 것이 아니요, 마음 고치기가 어려운 것이라. 이제부터 마음을 잘 고치라.
    12절대인(大人)을 공부하는 자는 항상 남 살리기를 생각하여야 하나니, 어찌 억조를 멸망케 하고 홀로 잘되기를 도모함이 옳으리오.” 하시거늘
    13절원일이 두려워하여 무례한 말로 상제님을 괴롭게 한 일을 뉘우치니라.
    14절또 원일의 아우는 형이 상제님을 추종하면서 집을 돌보지 않음을 싫어하여 항상 상제님을 욕하더니
    15절형에게 이 이야기를 듣고 생각하기를 ‘증산 어른을 욕한 죄로 집이 무너진 것이 아닌가’ 하여 이로부터 마음을 고치니라.

    Gaebyeok Is This Easy to Bring About

    1In July 1905, Sangjenim took Won-il and several other disciples to Gaeamsa Temple on Byeonsan Mountain, and there he had Won-il prepare a cow’s head and a bottle of rice wine for an offering ritual.2Sangjenim placed a bowl of cheongsu on one side of a temple chamber, set the boiled cow’s head in front of the bowl, and instructed Won-il to kneel facing it. When Won-il had done so, Sangjenim dropped three matchsticks into the cheongsu.

    Suddenly, the land was beset by torrential rain and powerful winds.

    3Sangjenim revealed to Won-il, “If I cast an entire box of matches into a large pot of cheongsu, the whole world would be inundated.4Understand that gaebyeok is this easy to bring about. If initiated before the proper time, gaebyeok would bring only disaster.”

    5With this, Sangjenim flicked some water in the direction of Seokgyo Village in Buan County. Clouds immediately gathered over the village and heavy rain cascaded down, yet the sky remained clear above the temple and its surroundings.

    A Lesson on the Dao of Mutual Life-Bettering and Life-Saving

    6Sangjenim then ordered Won-il, “Hurry to your house and then return.”

    Obeying this command, Won-il raced home. Upon arriving, he discovered his younger brother’s family gathered at his home because their own house had been destroyed by the sudden downpour.7Overwhelmed by sorrow, Won-il returned to Gaeamsa Temple and reported the tragedy to Sangjenim.

    8Sangjenim declared, “Bringing about gaebyeok is that easy, but how could it be a blessing if we were the only ones to survive after having destroyed the world with floods?”

    9Sangjenim continued, “Saving lives and healing the world is the dao of sages, while inflicting calamities upon people and spawning upheavals in the world is the way of conquerors and tyrants. 10The world has suffered long enough from conquerors and tyrants. Through the dao of mutual life-bettering and life-saving, I will edify humanity and bring forth peace and harmony on earth. 11Beholding the coming world is not difficult; the true difficulty lies in reforming the mind. From this time forth, faithfully reform your mind. 12One who seeks to become a noble human must always aspire to save others, so how could it be just to allow the multitudes to perish while you seek to thrive alone?”

    13Deeply awed, Won-il sincerely regretted having troubled Sangjenim with his ill-considered words.

    14Won-il’s younger brother had often spoken ill of Sangjenim, for he resented that Won-il had neglected the family while following Sangjenim. 15Yet, after listening to Won-il relate the story of what had happened, the younger brother thought to himself, “Could it be that my house collapsed as a punishment for the sin of blaspheming venerable Jeung-san?” The younger brother thereafter reformed his mind.
