¹At this time, Hyeong-ryeol’s wife gave birth to their third son. Shortly afterward, family members in the house shared the news of the son’s birth with Hyeong-ryeol and Sangjenim.²Sangjenim named the child, who astonishingly had four nipples, Cheon-ri-ma.

³Each time Hyeong-ryeol’s wife gave birth, she suffered abdominal pains for a month afterward. This latest occasion proved no different, and she started screaming from abdominal pains, deeply distressing Hyeong-ryeol.

⁴Sangjenim comforted him. “Such are the sufferings of life. From now on, have faith in me in all matters and abandon your worries.” He then described to Hyeong-ryeol a certain prescription for herbal medicine and instructed him, “Go now and buy two packets of such medicine.”⁵Hyeong-ryeol obeyed Sangjenim, then brewed the medicine and gave it to his wife. Her agonizing pains ceased, and all her other ailments, such as coughs and shortness of breath, were cured as well.⁶Deeply grateful, Hyeong-ryeol’s wife begged Sangjenim to stay as long as he wished.

⁷Smiling, Sangjenim said, “People think of others only after they themselves are made happy,” and he gladly accepted her earnest invitation.

⁸At the time, Sangjenim was thirty-two and Hyeong-ryeol was forty-one years of age.⁹Though Hyeong-ryeol was the elder of the two, he held Sangjenim in such heartfelt reverence that he felt it improper to pass directly in front of Sangjenim.¹⁰From that time forth, Sangjenim used Hyeong-ryeol’s household as his host household as he conducted the Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth. ¹¹To awaken Hyeong-ryeol’s mind and spirit so that he could serve in the Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth, Sangjenim had Hyeong-ryeol undertake intensive meditations, beginning April 15.
