천하창생 건지는 공부를 해야지

1절	신원일이 상제님을 따르기 전에 부안 어느 산 굴 속에 들어가 10년을 기약하고 수도를 한 적이 있더니

2절	그 즈음 상제님께서 공사를 행하시며 부안 신명을 부르시는데 신명이 대령하지 않는지라

3절	상제님께서 “네 이놈! 어찌하여 내가 부르는데도 오지 않느냐!” 하고 호통치시니

4절	그제야 그 신명이 와서 사죄하며 아뢰기를 “부안 사람 신원일이 굴에 들어와 공부를 하고 있어 잡신이 범접치 못하게 지키는 중이었습니다.” 하니라.

5절	이에 상제님께서 노하여 말씀하시기를 “거기서 헛공부하고 앉았으니 그만 나오라 해라! 도통 안 준다고 해라!” 하시거늘

6절	부안 신명이 원일에게 가서 ‘굴에서 나오라.’는 말씀을 전하니

7절	원일이 “내가 굳은 결심으로 ‘반드시 도통하고 나가리라.’ 하고 천지에 서약했거늘 누가 감히 나오라 마라 하느냐!” 하며 거역하는지라

8절	부안 신명이 그대로 아뢰니 상제님께서 들으시고 다만 “그러냐.” 하시고 “그만 가 보아라.” 하시니라.

9절	그 후 원일이 칠흑같이 어두운 굴에서 공부하고 있는데, 갑자기 태양 같은 밝은 빛이 쏟아져 들어와 눈이 부셔 정신을 차릴 수가 없더니

10절	문득 허공에서 “대장부가 천하창생 건지는 공부를 해야지, 어찌 저 혼자 도통하려 한단 말이냐. 헛공부니라!” 하고 우레 같은 소리가 들리며 천지가 진동하거늘

11절	원일이 깜짝 놀라 뒤돌아볼 경황도 없이 밖으로 뛰쳐나오니라. Undertake the Practice of Delivering the World’s People ¹In the time before Shin Won-il began following Sangjenim, Won-il secluded himself in a cave on a mountain in Buan County, vowing to meditate for ten years.²During this period, Sangjenim summoned the regional spirit of Buan while conducting a work of renewal, but the spirit did not answer the summons. ³“You wretch! Why do you not present yourself when I summon you?” Sangjenim thundered. ⁴Only then did the spirit appear before Sangjenim and beg forgiveness. “Shin Won-il from Buan secluded himself in a cave and entered into meditation, so I was guarding him to prevent any trespass by demons.” ⁵Enraged, Sangjenim declared, “He sits there engaged in a useless pursuit. Tell him to cease and come forth! Inform him that I will not grant enlightenment!” ⁶The Buan Spirit went to Won-il and conveyed Sangjenim’s command to leave the cave. ⁷But Won-il refused. “I have vowed to heaven and earth with the firmest of resolve that I will emerge from this cave only after attaining enlightenment. So who dares tell me to leave the cave?” ⁸The Buan Spirit returned and forthrightly related this to Sangjenim. After listening, Sangjenim merely said, “Is that so? You may go now.” ⁹Later, as Won-il was meditating in pitch-black darkness, light as radiant as the sun suddenly flooded into the cave, blinding him, and he struggled to maintain consciousness. ¹⁰Suddenly, from the empty air spoke a voice loud as roaring thunder, while heaven and earth shook, “A person of mettle should undertake the practice of delivering the world’s people. Why do you instead seek to attain enlightenment only for your own purposes? Yours is a useless pursuit!” ¹¹Aghast, Won-il dashed from the cave without so much as a backward glance.
