  • 내가 이르는 곳을 천지에 알려야
    1절이튿날 상제님께서 솔안을 떠나 정읍 대흥리(大興里)로 가실 때 공우를 돌아보시며 말씀하시기를 “만날 사람 만났을 적에….” 하시니
    2절공우가 문득 동학가사에 있는 '만나기만 만나 보면 너의 집안 운수로다.'라는 구절이 깨달아져 그 즉시 상제님을 따라나서니라.
    3절이날 대흥리 경석의 집에 이르시어 말씀하시기를 “내가 이르는 곳을 천지에 알려야 하리라.” 하시고
    4절글을 써서 서쪽 벽에 붙이시니 갑자기 우레가 크게 일어나거늘 “빠르기도 하다.” 하시고 그 글을 떼어 무릎 밑에 넣으시니 우레가 곧 그치는지라
    5절공우는 크게 놀라 감복하고, 마을 사람들은 대낮에 난데없이 우렛소리가 크게 일어나므로 이상히 여기니라.
    마음을 돌렸음을 고백하라
    6절우레를 거두시고 경석에게 물으시기를 “지난 갑오년 겨울에 이 집에서 세 사람이 동맹한 일이 있었느냐?” 하시니 경석이 “그렇습니다.” 하고 대답하거늘
    7절다시 “그 일로 인하여 모해자의 밀고로 너의 부친이 해를 입었느냐?” 하고 물으시니 경석이 울먹이며 “그러하였습니다.” 하고 대답하니라.
    8절상제님께서 또 물어 말씀하시기를 “너의 형제들이 그 모해자에게 큰 원한을 품어 복수하기를 도모하느냐?” 하시니
    9절경석이 아뢰기를 “자식의 도리로 어찌 복수할 마음을 갖지 아니하겠습니까?” 하거늘
    10절이에 상제님께서 일러 말씀하시기를 “너희들이 복수할 마음을 품고 있음을 너의 부친이 크게 걱정하여 나에게 고하니 너희들은 마음을 돌리라.
    11절이제는 악을 선으로 갚아야 할 때니라. 만일 악을 악으로 갚으면 되풀이 되풀이로 후천에 악의 씨를 뿌리는 것이 되느니라.
    12절너희들이 나를 따르려면 먼저 그 마음을 버려야 할지니 잘 생각하라.” 하시고
    13절“너희들은 선을 행하고 공을 세우라.” 하시니라.
    14절이에 경석이 세 아우를 데리고 별실에 들어가 서로 위로하며 그 원한을 풀기로 언약하고 그대로 아뢰니
    15절말씀하시기를 “그러면 뜰 밑에 짚을 펴고 청수 한 동이를 모셔 놓고, 그 청수를 향하여 너의 부친을 대한 듯이 마음을 돌렸음을 고백하라.” 하시니라.
    16절이에 경석이 명하신 대로 행하니 사형제가 설움이 북받쳐서 청수동이 앞에서 크게 울거늘
    17절상제님께서 이르시기를 “너의 부친이 너무 슬피 우는 것을 오히려 불쾌히 여기니 그만 그치라.” 하시니라.
    18절상제님께서 이로부터 한동안 대흥리 차경석의 집에 머무르시며 공사를 행하시니라.
    천지신명들이 알현할 때
    19절상제님께서 공사를 행하시는 동안 경석과 공우가 신안(神眼)이 열리어 보니
    20절천지신명들이 상제님께 배알할 때는 반드시 반천무지(攀天撫地)식으로 사배(四拜)를 올리고 상제님께서는 읍(揖)으로 대하시니라.

    The Place of My Arrival Must Be Announced to Heaven and Earth

    1The next morning, as Sangjenim left Soran Village for Daeheung-ri Village in Jeongeup County, he turned to Gong-u and said, “When you have met the one you were destined to meet....”2This immediately reminded Gong-u of a line in Su-un’s lyrics, “When you finally meet the one you are destined to meet, good fortune will find your family.” The meaning of this lyric now became clear to him, and he immediately began to follow Sangjenim.

    3When they arrived at Gyeong-seok’s house in Daeheung-ri Village that day, Sangjenim declared, “The place of my arrival must be announced to heaven and earth.”4With this, he composed a writing and affixed the paper to the western wall of the room. Suddenly, there were deafening thunderclaps. “That was swift,” Sangjenim observed. He removed the paper from the wall and seated himself with it under his knee, and the thunder ceased.

    5Gong-u was deeply startled and awed, and the villagers wondered at the oddness of powerful thunderclaps on a bright, clear day.

    Confess That You Have Changed Your Hearts

    6After Sangjenim had ended the thunderclaps, he asked Gyeong-seok, “In the winter of 1894, did three people enter into an alliance at this house?”

    “Yes, indeed,” Gyeong-seok answered.

    7“After the alliance was struck, did a schemer secretly inform on your father, causing him harm?”

    “Yes, that is correct,” Gyeong-seok tearfully replied.

    8Sangjenim asked yet another question, “You and your brothers harbor a terrible grudge against that perpetrator, so are you not planning to exact revenge?”

    9“As sons, how could we not yearn to avenge our father?” declared Gyeong-seok.

    10“Your father is praying to me, for he is extremely distressed that you and your brothers are harboring revenge in your hearts,” Sangjenim revealed. “You and your brothers must change your hearts. 11Now is the era in which evil must be requited with good. If evil is requited with evil, this cycle will perpetuate, and thus will the Later Heaven be sown with the seeds of evil. 12If you and your brothers seek to follow me, you must forsake revenge in your hearts. Consider my words carefully.”

    13Sangjenim then declared, “You must all engage in good and perform meritorious deeds.”

    14Afterward, Gyeong-seok led his three younger brothers into another room where they comforted one another and swore to abandon their grudge, and then they informed Sangjenim of their pledge.

    15“Since that is so, lay a bed of straw in the yard and, upon it, make an offering of a large pot of cheongsu,” Sangjenim instructed. “Facing the cheongsu as though you were addressing your father himself, confess that you have changed your hearts.”

    16As Gyeong-seok was carrying out Sangjenim’s command, the four brothers were overwhelmed with sorrow and wailed before the pot of cheongsu.

    17“Your father is rather displeased by your sorrowful wailing, so bring it to a cease.”

    18Thereafter, Sangjenim resided for a period at Cha Gyeong-seok’s house in Daeheung-ri Village, conducting works of renewal.

    When Spirits Seek an Audience with Sangjenim

    19On one occasion when Sangjenim was conducting a work of renewal, Gyeong-seok’s and Gong-u’s spiritual eyes opened,20and they witnessed that the spirits of heaven and earth who sought an audience with Sangjenim performed the embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth prostration four times. Sangjenim acknowledged these spirits by performing the eupbae.
