    1절상제님께서 숙소를 김치경(金致京)의 용암리 물방앗간에 정하시니 음식이며 잠자리며 모든 것이 누추하기 이를 데 없어 여느 사람도 견디기 어려워하는데
    2절경석이 이러한 고초를 겪으면서도 떠나지 아니하고 상제님을 ‘정읍의 자기 집으로 모시겠다’ 하거늘
    3절상제님께서 진노하시어 큰 소리로 꾸짖으시기를 “나는 너와는 아무런 인연이 없노라. 어서 내 앞에서 썩 물러가라, 이놈아!” 하시니라.
    4절상제님께서 경석이 떠나지 않음을 괴로워하시며 수차 물러가기를 재촉하시되
    5절경석이 듣지 않고 계속 자기 집으로 함께 가시기를 간청하니 그때마다 혹 성을 내시고 욕을 하시며 쫓아내기도 하시는데
    6절경석이 보기에는 그러한 모든 일이 더욱 범상치 않을 뿐 아니라
    7절수운가사(水雲歌詞)에 있는 ‘여광여취(如狂如醉) 저 양반을 간 곳마다 따라가서 지질한 그 고생을 뉘로 대해 그 말하며’ 하는 구절이 생각나매
    8절떠나지 않고 열흘 동안을 머물면서 제자가 되기를 굳이 청하니라.
    9절이에 상제님께서 이르시기를 “네가 나를 따르려면 모든 일을 전폐하고 오직 내가 가르치는 바에만 일심(一心)하여야 할지니
    10절이제 돌아가서 모든 일을 정리하고 6월 초하룻날 다시 이곳으로 찾아오라.” 하시니라.
    11절경석이 비로소 하직하고 집에 돌아와 아우들을 모아 놓고 상제님을 만난 일과 전주 송사를 작파한 일을 말하며
    12절“너희들, 사람 생명이 크냐, 돈이 크냐? 나는 사람을 죽일 수가 없어 그냥 돌아왔노라. 이제 나는 선생님을 따라 사람 살리는 공부를 하려 하노라.” 하고 아우들을 설득하더니
    13절드디어 모든 일을 정리하고 6월 초하룻날에 다시 용암리에 와서 상제님을 뵙고 정읍으로 가시기를 간청하니라.
    14절이날 밤에 상제님께서 풀밭에서 주무시다가 닭이 운 뒤에 일어나시어 말씀하시기를 “잘못 풀밭에 누웠구나. 왜 일찍 깨우지 않았느냐.” 하시니라.
    15절상제님께서 돌 위에서 주무시기도 하고 들판의 농부들과 한가로이 말씀을 나누기도 하시니 경석이 뒤따르며 지성으로 모시니라.
    16절상제님께서 계속 경석의 추종을 불허하시다가 사흘 동안을 지내신 뒤에야 비로소 허락하시며 말씀하시기를
    17절“내가 일찍이 목물 속에서 허우적거리며 고생하다가 겨우 헤어나 발목물에 서 있는데
    18절네가 다시 나를 깊은 길물로 끌어들이는구나.” 하시니라.

    1Sangjenim chose Gim Chi-gyeong’s watermill as his lodging, but the food and sleeping conditions were extremely stark, hardly tolerable by anyone’s standards.2Despite the terrible discomfort, Gyeong-seok remained with Sangjenim at the mill while urging Sangjenim to allow him to host Sangjenim at his house in Jeongeup County.

    3Sangjenim angrily shouted, “You and I have nothing to do with one another. Leave my sight at once, you fool!”4Perturbed by Gyeong-seok’s presence, Sangjenim repeatedly demanded that he immediately leave,5but Gyeong-seok would not heed these words and persisted in entreating Sangjenim to come to his house. At each such entreaty, Sangjenim became angry, cursed at Gyeong-seok, or tried to drive him away,6which Gyeong-seok considered all the more extraordinary.7It reminded him of a line in Su-un’s lyrics: “To whom can I relate the wearisome hardships I suffered following that man who seemed a lunatic at one moment and a drunk the next?”

    8For ten days, Gyeong-seok remained, persistently begging for acceptance as a disciple.

    9At last, Sangjenim announced to him, “If you wish to follow me, you must abandon all worldly affairs so that you may devote yourself solely to my teachings with one mind.10Now go home and settle all your affairs, then return here on June 1.”

    11Gyeong-seok finally took his leave from Sangjenim and returned home. There, he gathered his younger brothers and described to them his encounter with Sangjenim and the forgoing of the lawsuit in Jeonju. 12Gyeong-seok sought to persuade them, “Brothers, what is more important, a person’s life or money? I could not cause someone’s ruin, so I merely returned home. From this time forth, I will follow the Teacher in undertaking the practice of saving others.”

    13After settling his personal matters at home, Gyeong-seok returned to Yongam-ri Village on June 1 and implored Sangjenim to come with him to Jeongeup.

    14That night, Sangjenim fell asleep in a grassy field and did not awaken until a rooster crowed in the morning. He castigated Gyeong-seok, “I did not intend to fall asleep on the grass. Why did you not wake me?” 15Henceforth, whether Sangjenim slept on a boulder or had leisurely conversations with farmers in the fields, Gyeong-seok attended on him with utmost devotion.

    16Even after Gyeong-seok returned from his home, Sangjenim did not allow Gyeong-seok to follow him and only acceded after three days, declaring as he did so, 17“I had struggled out of neck-deep water into ankle-deep shallows, 18but now you are pulling me back out into head-deep water.”
