¹On September 9, 1905, Sangjenim commanded, “Bring me two rolls of stiff cotton.”²From this fabric he had a tent large enough to fit two people built for Ho-yeon in the front yard of her family’s home in Heukseokgol Village, and he announced to her,

“You will now be secluded.”

³“But how can I live if I can’t come out?”

“You can still live.”

⁴Sangjenim then ordered a round well dug inside the tent at its east side, warning, “If it is dug improperly, a person will die.”⁵After entering the dry well himself, Sangjenim commanded, “Measure whether the depth is three or four feet!” ⁶Hyeong-ryeol cut a bulrush and thrust it into the well. The bulrush’s flower was level with the hole’s top, the well’s depth slightly less than four feet.

⁷Later, Sangjenim announced, “There is now ample water,” and he had stones stacked around the well and a cover made. He then floated a bowl on the water’s surface and instructed Ho-yeon, “Peer into the well.”

⁸Ho-yeon did so and curtly declared, “There’s nothing, but a floating bowl....”

⁹Sangjenim used a stick to stir the water east, west, south, and north. He then scooped water into the bowl and laid sticks atop the bowl in the shape of the word ten (十), dividing the bowl into four parts.¹⁰Pressing down on the center of the cross, Sangjenim indicated one part to Ho-yeon and commanded, “Drink. This part is yours. ¹¹This is cheongsu, for the receiving of the qi of heaven and earth. You must drink first, for only then can I drink.” Sangjenim next commanded Hyeong-ryeol, “You must drink from another part.”

¹²Obeying Sangjenim’s commands, Ho-yeon held the ends of the sticks with both hands and drank three sips from one part, and Hyeong-ryeol then held the ends of the sticks with both hands and took three sips from another part.

¹³“I am the last to drink,” Sangjenim declared, and he drank the remaining water through yet another part.
