¹Sangjenim arrived in Salpojeongi Village, Gobu County, accompanied by Shin Won-il, Bak Gong-u, and several other disciples, and went to an inn to rest.

²Suddenly, lightning flashed, followed by terrific cracks of thunder, until it seemed that lightning would surely strike the inn at any moment.³Fear and panic seized all in the inn, and everyone else witnessing the sudden spectacle was petrified with fear.⁴However, Sangjenim roared at the sky, “Cease that disruptive lightning at once!” and the lightning immediately halted.

⁵While in Daeheung-ri Village earlier, Gong-u had witnessed Sangjenim create thunder by composing a writing and pasting it on the wall, and now he saw Sangjenim stop thunder and lightning in an instant with mere words of reprimand.⁶Gong-u realized that Sangjenim wielded heaven and earth’s power of creation-transformation at will, and he revered Sangjenim all the more from that day forth.

⁷Sangjenim one day commanded Gong-u, “You have faithfully prayed before each meal for years, and now you have met the one you were destined to meet—so offer to me your prayers before each meal from this time forth.”

⁸“I will do as you bid,” Gong-u declared, rejoicing in the conviction that his lifelong dream had finally come true.⁹Before meals, Eastern Learning followers prayed, “O Great Divine Teacher, I entreat your presence,” but Gong-u had always instead prayed, “O Lord of Heaven, I wish to behold you.”¹⁰Listening attentively to Sangjenim’s words, Gong-u realized that Sangjenim was perfectly aware of his thoughts. ¹¹Moreover, having witnessed Sangjenim wield heaven and earth’s power of creation-transformation at will, Gong-u truly believed that the Lord of Heaven had indeed incarnated into this world.
