¹While Sangjenim was residing in Guritgol Village, Gyeong-hak arrived and informed him that a long dry spell had made farmers deeply fearful that they would be unable to transplant the rice seedlings in time.

²Sangjenim declared, “The worries of the multitudes are my worries.” With this, he ordered Gap-chil, “Prepare a large pot of cheongsu for an offering.”³Sangjenim then gave Gyeong-hak a rolled-up paper which he had earlier filled with writing, and commanded, “Soak this in the cheongsu and rub it until it dissolves into pulp.”

⁴Gyeong-hak carried out this command, but no rain fell.

⁵Sangjenim said to Gap-chil, “I had attached to your person a commander spirit bearing a heavenly mandate to summon a rain spirit from the West in order to satisfy the people’s desperate yearning for rain.⁶However, you fell asleep last night in disobedience to my command, and so there is no rain. Remove your clothes, stand before the cheongsu with your hands together in prayer, and implore forgiveness.”

⁷Gap-chil obeyed, and dark clouds suddenly appeared in the western sky and brought a heavy rain. In a short time, the stream in front of the village was overflowing.

⁸“I believe that is enough,” Gyeong-hak suggested deferentially. At this, Sangjenim took up a fan and waved it but once, and the rain quickly ceased.

⁹“Pour out the cheongsu and dress again,” Sangjenim ordered Gap-chil,¹⁰then he declared to the disciples, “Cultivate and purify yourself faithfully and you will be able to accomplish anything at will.”
