Yi Chi-bok’s Campaign to Move the Dojang 1In the spring of 1915, Yi Chi-bok and Chae Sa-yun met with Gim Hyeong-guk of Pilam Village in Jangseong County,2and they reached a consensus to build a new house in Pilam Village and escort Taemonim to it, hence relocating the dojang.3Taemonim, however, did not grant Her approval, so this aspiration hence failed to bear fruit. 4In the autumn of 1916 (DG 46), Chi-bok next consulted the followers of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, purchased a house in Wonpyeong Village, and then entreated Taemonim that the dojang be relocated.5Displeased by Gyeong-seok’s autocratic ways for some time, Taemonim approved the relocation. Yi Chi-bok Leaves Taemonim’s Dao Order 6At Cha Yun-gyeong’s house, on November 27, the day before the winter solstice, Chi-bok and Sa-yun consulted with representatives of practitioners from various regions and reached a consensus to relocate the dojang to Wonpyeong Village the day after the winter solstice. 7However, on the day of the winter solstice, Yi Yun-su, at Gyeong-seok’s request, advised Taemonim to rescind Her approval of the dojang relocation; and Gahng Sa-seong attacked Chi-bok in the presence of Taemonim by citing his faults.8Gravely concerned for Chi-bok and worried about strife among the disciples, Taemonim declared, “All efforts to relocate the dojang must cease.”9The campaign to relocate the dojang therefore ended in failure, leaving Chi-bok and Sa-yun no choice but to eventually bid farewell to Taemonim’s dao order and depart. |
