　[편집자주] 증산도 사상연구소의 연구원들과 외국인 신도들이 이틀간의 여정으로 증산 상제님의 성지를 다녀왔다. 이번 성지순례는 평소 도전 번역작업에 참여하며 상제님 태모님의 행적과 말씀에 자연스레 젖어있던 외국 연구원들에게 또다른 감회와 감동을 안겨주었다. 참여한 일행 중 러시아어 번역작업을 담당하고 있는 악트닌 연구원의 성지순례기를 영한대역으로 소개한다.

　Our two-month education had reached its culmination, and there we were: a team of five foreign researchers traveling to Jeolla-do Province to visit sacred sites worshipped by the Korean nation in general and by Jeung San Do followers especially.
　두 달 동안 이어진 교육의 정점에서 우리들 다섯 명의 외국인 연구원들은 한국인들, 특히 증산도 신도들에게는 더욱 더 특별한 성지를 둘러보기 위해 전라도를 방문했다.
　

　
　The two-day trip served as the climax of an education course designed to intimately acquaint us with the life of the Korean people and give us an opportunity to discover the roots of this truly Korean religion. This awareness would aid us in our translation and editing of the foreign-language editions of the Dojeon (Dao Scriptures), Jeung San Do's collected sacred teachings of Jeung-san Sangjenim, the Ruling God of the universe, who incarnated as a human in 1871.
　교육과정의 클라이막스로 마련된 이틀간의 여행은 우리들에게 한국인의 생활상과 진정한 한국 종교의 뿌리를 발견할 수 있는 값진 기회가 되었다. 이번 여행에서 우리가 얻은 깨달음은, 도전은 물론 1871년 인간으로 강세하신 우주의 주재자이신 증산 상제님의 성스러운 가르침들을 번역·편집하는 데에 많은 도움이 되었다.
　
　
　The first stop of our tour was a small, half-ruined traditional house at the base of one of Bomunsan Mountain's lofty cliffs. Mr. Ahn Gyeong-jeon, Jeung San Do's Jongjeongnim, spent his early days at this house studying philosophy, religion, and the social sciences. Mr. Ryu explained the importance of this house's location, as well as that of the city of Taejeon, using Oriental geomantic and philosophical terms such as 'mutual life-giving'(sangsaeng), 'mutual conflict'(sanggeuk), gaebyeok, etc.
　가장 먼저 도착한 보문산 자락에는 반쯤 허물어져 있는 작은 한국식 집이 있었다. 안경전 증산도 종정님께서 철학, 종교, 사회과학 등을 공부하며 어린 시절을 보내신 집이었다.
　이 곳에서 태전이라는 도시와 이 집의 중요성에 관한 자세한 설명을 비롯하여, 동양 지리학, 상생, 상극, 개벽 등과 같은 철학적인 술어에 관한 설명을 들을 수가 있었다.
　
　
　We journeyed next to the city of Jeonju and there saw Namgosan Mountain, Hanbyeok Pavilion, Seo Weon-gyu's herbal store, magnificent Pungnam Gate, Gwanwangmyo Shrine, and Heukseokgol Valley.
　여행은 계속해서 전주로 이어졌다. 그 곳에서 우리는 남고산, 한벽정, 서원규의 약방, 환상적인 풍남문, 관왕묘 그리고 흑석골을 둘러보았다.
　
　
　The spring weather was beautiful and sunny (albeit a bit cold and breezy) as our minivans wound through the peaceful rural countryside of Korea, past farmhouses and rice paddies, into the mountains. A strange feeling came over me, and the spirits, people, deeds, houses, villages, mountains, and shrines described in the Dojeon suddenly became real to me.
　우리가 탄 미니밴이 농가와 논을 지나 산 속으로 이어지는 평화스런 한국의 시골 풍경을 지나는 동안 계속 된 한국의 봄 날씨는 참으로 아름답고 화창했다. (미풍이 약간 쌀쌀하게 느껴지긴 했지만 말이다.) 여행 중 묘한 기분이 스며들었는데 바로 도전 속의 신명들과 사람들, 행적들, 집과 마을, 산과 사당 등이 갑자기 현실로 느껴지는 것이었다.
　
　
　Our next stop was Moaksan Mountain, which boasts two Buddhist temples Daewonsa and Geumsansaon different slopes. Both temples are beautiful, but I found my visit to Daewonsa especially memorable for two reasons. First, I had quite recently started translating chapter two of the Dojeon, which relates the story of Sangjenim's attainment of ultimate enlightenment and His long days of study at Daewonsa's Seven Stars Shrine. My second reason involves a passage that you might recall, which describes Sangjenim's descent from Moaksan Mountain:
　다음 목적지는 대원사와 금산사, 두 사찰을 자랑하는 모악산이었다. 두 절은 모두 아름다웠지만 특히 대원사를 방문했을 때의 느낌은 잊을 수가 없다. 두 가지의 이유가 있는데 첫 번째는 대원사의 칠성각에서 오랜 공부를 끝내신 후 상제님께 천지대신문을 여신 도전 2편의 번역 작업을 최근에 시작했기 때문이고, 두 번째 이유는 상제님께서 모악산에서 내려오실 때의 성구말씀 때문인데 독자 여러분도 대부분 알고 있는 구절일 것이다.
　
　
　His meditation completed, Jeung-san Sangjenim put on His new clothes and went outside. All the birds and animals from around the valley gathered to greet Him. They seemed to be pleading for something. (Dojeon 2:11:1-2)
　상제님께서 새 옷으로 갈아입고 대원사를 나서시니 갑자기 골짜기의 온갖 새와 짐승들이 모여들어 반기면서 무엇을 애원하는 듯하거늘 이들을 바라보며 말씀하시기를 “너희들도 후천 해원을 구하느냐?” 하시니 금수들이 알아들은 듯이 머리를 숙이는지라. (道典 2:12:6-8)
　
　
　As we arrived at Daewonsa Temple and stood in the temple yard listening to Mr. Ryu's explanations, a group of charming puppies suddenly loped up to us eagerly, tales wagging. They seemed to be pleading for something, and this reminded me strongly of the above Dojeon quote.
　대원사에 도착한 후, 사찰의 마당에 서서 가이드의 설명을 듣던 도중, 한 무리의 귀여운 강아지들이 꼬리를 흔들며 갑자기 우리들에게 뛰어들었던 적이 있었다. 그 강아지들은 마치 뭔가를 애원하는 듯 보였고, 그 때문에 위 도전 성구가 더욱 더 강렬한 느낌으로 다가왔다.
　
　
　During the two-day tour, our group of five researchers had traveled hundreds of miles that crisscrossed the entire Jeolla-do Province region. Listening to the stories and accounts about the lives and work of Sangjenim and Taemonim, we could almost feel Them standing close behind us.
　Our final stop on the second day of the tour was tiny Gaengmang-ri Village, where Sangjenim was born in 1871.
　이틀간의 여행 동안 우리 연구원 그룹은 수백 마일에 걸쳐 전라도 땅을 종횡으로 누비고 다녔다. 상제님과 태모님의 생애와 업적에 대한 이야기와 설명을 듣고 있을 때는 두 분께서 우리들의 바로 등뒤에 계시는 듯한 느낌마저 들었다.
　둘째 날, 1871년 상제님께서 탄강하신 작은 마을 객망리를 마지막으로 이틀간의 우리 여정은 끝이 났다.
